Vergil began composing this history of England at the encouragement of Henry VII. Three editions were published between 1534 and 1555, with each new edition covering more years.This twenty-seventh book covers an account of Henry VIII's reign to 1537, and includes a highly critical portrait of Wolsey. Partial remains of metal clasps to fore edge of front and rear board. Vellum significantly age toned, with extensive handling marks. Bumping to back strip head and tail, with significant losses of vellum to these regions. Joints starting, with rear board holding firm, and front board a touch tender. Inscriptions to front and rear pastedowns. Lacking blanks. Internally, generally firmly bound, but with first three gatherings working loose. Pages age toned. Small worm holes to head of each leaf of index. Tide marks throughout the work to page perimeters. Extensive inscriptions to title page and final leaf, with further ink annotations throughout.
